Summer Flowers for an English Countryside Wedding in Lincolnshire
The brief: vibrant summer feel with pop of colour
This Aswarby Rectory wedding embraced a vibrant summer feel, with pops of jewel-like colours—pink, blue, yellow, and orange—shining through lush dark green foliage. The couple specifically requested wedding flowers that were locally grown and seasonal, with a special emphasis on including scented herbs. Natural and wild vibes were key to this design.
As a wedding florist based in Lincolnshire, this brief was right up our alley at a venue we adore! The entire design featured British-grown flowers and foliage from Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, and Norfolk.
Weddings at Aswarby Rectory
Aswarby Rectory is a lovingly renovated Georgian county house, ideal for weddings and events. Once the rectory for the church next door, it is nestled in the heart of the Lincolnshire countryside, surrounded by fields and parkland.
The current owners have restored the building to highlight its beautiful original features, from the stone flagstones on the floor to the wooden staircases, all enhanced by the abundance of light streaming through large sash windows. Decorated in neutral tones throughout, creating a calming and coming home feeling as you enter through the instantly recognisable front door.
The ceremony room, with its dark wooden benches, contrasts beautifully with the light reflected from the chandelier and the stunning old fireplace that serves as a backdrop.
After the ceremony, guests can enjoy drinks outdoors, and on the rarest of British summer days, you can dine outside for your reception. H and R were fortunate to have one of those warm and sunny days, dining outside at long rows of dark wooden tables before heading inside to dance the night away.
The highlight: wedding staircase flower
One of the iconic moments at Aswarby Rectory weddings is the bride walking down the grand staircase. As with many couples, H and R chose to showcase this moment with a full floral staircase installation. Joyous pops of colour grew through the greenery, spilling over the bannisters in long, graceful trails. By grouping the colours together, we created more impact and focal points that added movement and visual interest.
Long trails of sweet pea and jasmine floated gently in the breeze, while other foliage seemed to grow up and over the handrail.
The bride was accompanied by five bridesmaids, and the groom completed his formal black tie look with a colourful buttonhole. Seven buttonholes for the men and two ladies’ corsages completed the personal flowers.
The venue’s large collection of vintage ceramic vases was used for the reception tables, filled with the same flowers that brought vibrant colour to the tables outside on the lawn.
Summer wedding flower choices
A June wedding is the perfect time for British-grown flowers, as it marks peak peony season—one of the most in-demand wedding flowers. The selection for this summer wedding included:
- Apple mint, rosemary and fennel foliage – filling the venue with scent and creating their own wedding perfume
- Peonies – perfect round balls of ruffly petals with the most incredible scent
- Sweet peas – long trails of sweet peas with their delicate flower adding to the perfume
- Corncockle – a garden variety of a native wildflower with the most delicate dancing stems and elegant petals
- Love in a mist – pretty pointed petals with a lacy green ruffle
- Foxgloves – tall and sinuous columns of flowering bells, also a wildflower!
- Snapdragons – a cottage garden flower that is equally at home at a wedding
