J & J's Spring Wedding at Home on a Family Farm in Lincolnshire
Jennie and James wanted their wedding to be more than just a one-day event. Living in Hong Kong for their careers meant their trips home were precious, and they wanted to truly connect with family and friends. By hosting their wedding at the Groom’s family farm in Lincolnshire, they turned their celebration into a full weekend of joy. The venue — a paddock close to the house with views of Lincoln Cathedral in the distance—was the perfect spot for a relaxed yet refined wedding. The four-pole sailcloth marquee provided the ideal setting, comfortably accommodating 140 guests, with a bar and dance floor, no matter the weather.
Sailcloth marquees are a favourite of ours here at Limewood Flowers, thanks to their elegant shape and high ceilings that add grandeur while maintaining a welcoming, intimate atmosphere.
The ceremony took place a short walk from the marquee, on the lawn of the Grooms’ family home, with a magnificent willow tree providing the perfect backdrop, framed by lush hedges.
In regards to flowers, the couple had no specific requests but wanted the flowers to be seasonal and in harmony with the venue’s natural beauty —exactly what we specialise in! Here’s how we brought their vision to life.
Spring Wedding Floral Palette & Design
The colour palette chosen for this spring wedding was perfect for the season. An abundance of green tones established a calming, refined atmosphere, while the colour accents added depth and visual interest.
Outdoor Ceremony Flowers
For the ceremony, the main floral goal was to add colour to the natural green backdrop. We designed a floral meadow crescent to accentuate the wonderful willow tree, adding height and texture with a variety of smaller, elegant flowers. Grouping the flowers and colours created impact without the design becoming flat. The naturalistic design gave the impression that the flowers could have been part of the garden, simply growing in place.
The ceremony backdrop was complemented by the floral meadow aisle, ensuring colour throughout the ceremony space, drawing in the flower borders around the lawn and making the whole space feel as one. Colours were again grouped to add shape and create a more naturalistic feel, while wildflowers gathered from the edges of the farm were incorporated into the design. Not only did this help the design to fit seamlessly within the wider farm landscape, but it was also important to the Groom’s family that the farm was represented in the flowers.
Marquee Wedding Flowers: Bringing the Outdoors Inside
For the reception, the colour balance was quite different. The space was very neutral and to bring the lush green outdoors inside, we added ‘trees’ on every marquee pole filling the space with delicate greenery and drawing the eye upwards. The foliage was chosen to be delicate and dancing in keeping with the refined feel of the day. The tables, with their brown tones, created a café-style feel, and clear glass bud vases filled with flowers brought elegance and colour to the space.
How the reception food will be served is a key part of designing table flowers. With sharing platters on the menu, bud vases were the perfect choice to allow space on the tables while ensuring that colour infused the whole length of each table. The clear glass vases reflected the candlelight beautifully, enhancing the intimate atmosphere as the sun set.
Flower Choices: Best of British Spring Blooms
The couple loved all types of flowers, so we selected the best of the season from our network of British growers. May is a fabulous time for British flowers, with warmer weather and a wide range of blooms coming into season.
A selection of delicate blooms was chosen to fulfil the couple’s elegant and refined brief, including:

- Geums
- Applemint
- Ferns
- Forget-me-nots
Sustainability Considerations
Given that the family farm is dedicated to growing food sustainably, it was important to Jennie and James that the flowers for their wedding also be locally sourced. This choice not only supports local businesses but also reduces the carbon footprint, as the flowers required no air miles and fewer pesticides compared to imported options.
All the flowers used in the wedding were grown in England, with the majority grown within Lincolnshire and the longest distance any travelled was from Hampshire. No floral foam was used, and the only single-use plastic was cable ties. After the wedding weekend, the flowers were taken home by guests, and the remaining blooms were collected and composted by us.
